Interprimary School Football

National Energy, in support of youth development and sport in the Mayaro area, collaborated with The GUAYA United Football Club to host a youth  football training camp for young people between the ages of 8 and 12 years at the Mafeking Recreational Grounds in Mayaro. The camp, which was held for two weeks, commenced on Saturday 6th 2013 and included sixty (60) children from the local primary schools as well as students from local football clubs.

The participants were trained in various football techniques, including ball control and endurance, by coaches from GUAYA United.
At the end of each training session a practice match was held for the participants to demonstrate their new skills. To further reinforce the new techniques learnt by the campers, The Ron La Forrest Football Academy from Port of Spain was invited to participate in a friendly tournament held on July 20th at the Mafeking Recreational Ground. The Academy currently hosts a football program that targets at risk youth in the Port of Spain area.
The tournament consisted of several matches catering to various age groups. The teams from Mayaro, though not victorious, showed great sportsmanship and a definite improvement in skill level. All participants of the camp received medals based on their participation, but it was the under 15 team from The Ron La Forrest Football Academy that placed first overall and received the challenge trophy.

In his address to the participants Academy Administrator and former player for the Trinidad and Tobago National Football Team, Mr. Ron La Forrest, expressed his delight with the tournament and the work being done by National Energy in the area of youth development.  He indicated his willingness to participate in the tournament next year and challenged the participants to work towards their perfecting game, enjoying the sport and making friends as they go along. “A football friend is a friend for life”, he stated.
